The nurse examines the client's legs in bed. The nurse asks the client to extend both legs on the bed and the nurse grasps one leg at the ankle and moves it away from the midline and returns.

These movements demonstrate range of motion of the hip joint. What is the best terminology that describes movement away from the midline that the nurse should include in the electronic medication record? A) Abduction
  B) Adduction
  C) Dorsiflexion
  D) Plantar flexion

A
Feedback:
Movement away from the midline is abduction; movement toward the midline is adduction. The client is asked to bend the foot so the toes point upward (dorsiflexion); downward (plantar flexion).
