Lamarck's ideas correlate to an escalator of evolution. Lamarck proposed that organisms become more complex over time.

Lamarck's view of evolution was progressive, in that simple organisms were constantly becoming more complex or "advanced" over time. Darwin's view was that evolution produces a tree of life, and individuals can become simpler or more complex depending on their environment.
