A severely injured adult male is brought into the ER following an auto accident and is given 2 units of O negative blood while waiting for a crossmatch to be completed for the other 4 units of blood that the doctor has ordered. The nurse discovers a card identifying the man as a Jehovah’s Witness. The nurse should:
1.   inform the laboratory to hold the process on the type and crossmatch.
2.   call the hospital administration to obtain a court order to intervene.
3.   inform the doctor that the patient is a Jehovah’s Witness.
4.   remove all tourniquets and cardiac monitoring devices.

Number 3 is the most patient centered, respects the patient, and takes into consideration cultural needs.
