Methemoglobinemia is a genetic or acquired condition that reduces the oxygen carrying capacity of blood. Acquired methemoglobinemia has been reported following the administrations of benzocaine topical and injectable prilocaine. It is also possible when using articaine. Clinical anoxia may result from methemoglobin levels as low as ten percent, at which point signs of reduced oxygenation and cyanosis may develop.
