When the nurse is asked whether research utilization is a part of the general nursing practice at the hospital, the nurse replies, We try to do that, but it is difficult. What is the most prevalent reason for this concern?

  1. Expense of making research results widely available
  2. Lack of advanced education of nurses practicing at the bedside
  3. Inability of many nurses to understand research articles
  4. Limited findings of nursing research applicable to practice

Rationale 1: Expense is not a valid argument because many journals and articles are available online for a moderate cost.
Rationale 2: This is a barrier, but not the most common barrier.
Rationale 3: Most research articles and reports are written for researchers rather than clinicians. Nurses are put-off by the complexity and level at which these articles are written.
Rationale 4: This is a barrier, but not the most common barrier.
