What role can ecologists play in developing a sustainable fishery? Does the source of harvest mortality (e.g. seals vs. people) have differential impacts on population growth and/or evolution?

Ecologists can perform basic research to understand the factors influencing fish population dynamics and growth, and can develop models which predict how populations will respond to varying levels of harvest, in combination with other biotic and abiotic factors. Source of mortality may have differential impacts on fish population growth and evolution, because the selective pressures applied by seals vs. humans (for example, for fish behaviours which help reduce predation risk) are not necessarily the same. In addition, while fish have coevolved with natural predators, they have only recently encountered selection due to commercial harvesting and are likely less well equipped to respond to this pressure.
