Marine heterotrophic bacteria play an important role in breaking down and decomposing dead organic matter. The processes of decomposition release nutrients that were locked into tissues back into the marine environment where they can be taken up by marine primary producers. Without these bacteria life would cease in the seas due to a lack of nutrients.
