CO binds to hemoglobin tightly, preventing the cells of your body from obtaining oxygen. It doesn't do anything for cellular respiration, it just prevents it from happening. Your body, instead turns to glycolysis.

The final electron acceptor in the electron transport chain is oxygen. Oxygen can't get to the mitochondria if it can't bind to hemoglobin.
