Nomenclature for writing alleles on a homologous chromosome pair.

The phrase DEP / dep means the first three letters, DEP, represents the alleles that will appear, in this order, on the first homologous chromosome. The "/" signifies the following alleles, dep, will appear on the second homologous chromosome. It is to be assumed that the genes will appear at the same location on both the two homologous chromosomes.

1. A student wrote the male genotype as DEP / dep. Do you agree? Explain.

2. The sperm chromosome maps are most likely to be DeP than DEP. Explain.

1. The convention is to separate alleles on homologous chromosomes by a slash, so the proper way to write the male genotype is: Dep / dEP

2. The alleles D/d and e/E are relatively close to each other on the chromosome, so there is less likelihood of a crossover linkage event. p/P, on the other hand, is relatively far away from De/dE, so the likelihood of a crossover is much greater.
