The Democratic frontrunner was Stephan Douglas. Although Douglas had once been popular in the South, after his opposition to admitting Kansas as a slave state, most southern political leaders now considered him to be a traitor to their cause. Mississippi Senator Jefferson Davis insisted on a party platform that opened all the territories to slavery, regardless of the views of their citizens.
