Where do fossil fuels (oil/petroleum/coal/gasoline/natural gas, etc.) come from and how are they created?  Similarly, why do fossil fuels release so much energy when we use them?

Fossil fuels come from the compression of dead organic matter from the earth's past that was buried, heated, and compressed under high pressure over millions of years. By heating oil at various temperatures, different compounds can be separated, including diesel, gasoline, etc. Given that organic matter consists largely of carbon and hydrogen, these hydrocarbon bonds are held together tightly, and so when burned, they bonds release that energy as heat. This heat can be used to power engines and turbines.
