decide whether you support capital punishment.  In your response provide at least three (3) reasons either for or against the death penalty, label them accordingly and list at least two (2) other factors that should be considered in the equation (i.e. religion, desire of the victim, etc).

Capital punishment is an excellent method to deterring crime. All human beings - to some degree - fear death. The death penalty not only acts as a scare tactic, it sends a strong message to society that taking the life of another person unjustifiably will not go in vain, but be punished accordingly. While this is contrary to what's mentioned in the New Testament, a society can only be homogenous if the rule of law is followed, not solely what's mentioned in the biblical texts.

Another reason why capital punishment ought to me enforced is that it prevents the need to hold hostile criminals in a jail cell for life. The idea that a prison is a rehabilitation center for criminals is a misnomer, as most felons are repeat criminals. If a person ends up serving their time for killing another human being, for example, and are ready to re-enter society, members of society who know about the person's past will likely feel uncomfortable and uneasy knowing a murderer is free. By enforcing capital punishment, taxpayer dollars are saved towards bettering society, rather than using resources only to hold a person in captivity for the rest of their life like animals in a zoo.

Finally, not having capital punishment plays against our human nature. Imagine losing someone you love and raised to a murderer. You will not live a normal life knowing that the person who took away your eternal happiness is still alive. Hence, the family members of the deceased will never be able to live life normally, and will only grow to resent society and the person who commited the crime. While we do have a forgiveness instinct, it is in our human nature to take revenge, and only then could a family begin to heal.
