This conductor could provide a path for the lightening discharge to ground. Not using the discharge directly but indirectly through inductance. Maybe several conductors in parallel, so if one gets hot the charge could jump to the another one.
A conductor that extends so high that it could possibly be hit by lightening constantly. and possibly gain inductance from this. or a rod that extends beyond the ionosphere.

sure, they are called lightning rods, and millions of buildings have them. They include a heavy wire that goes to a plate buried in the ground.

Yes. Look up lightning rod.  Only single conductor for each air terminal (one of the rods on the roof).
