Although some neurons can transmit impulses at 150 m/s (300 mph), neural transmission across a chemical synapse from a presynatpic neuron to a postsynaptic neuron is comparatively slow. The reason is because of the time required for the neurotransmitter release, diffusion across the synapse, and binding to receptors. Typically, this synaptic delay lasts 0.3-5.0 ms.
