1 -- Downward displacement of the pelvic organs into the vagina results from weakened pelvic musculature, which is usually attributed to stretching of the supporting ligaments and muscles during pregnancy and childbirth. Unrepaired lacerations from childbirth, rapid deliveries, multiple pregnancies, congenital weakness, or loss of elasticity and muscle tone with aging may contribute to these disorders. The presence of endometriosis, pelvic inflammatory disease, and tumors would not be likely causes of uterine prolapse.
