A
The nurse may assume several different roles within the context of the nurse-patient relationship. These roles include counselor, teacher, leader, or surrogate parent. As the relationship progresses, the nurse may assume the roles of listener, teacher, and expert. Prior to assuming any role, the nurse is first viewed by the patient as a stranger.
