C
Orem considers self-care as meeting one's own basic needs, including the self-care requisites of universal, developmental, and health-deviation needs. A universal need is an essential require-ment for everyone: food, shelter, air, water, and other basic needs. A developmental need, such as trust, love, and belonging, changes as a person moves through each life-cycle period. A health-deviation need is based on an individual's genetic or constitutional deviations from nor-mal.
