Vulnerable populations have limited access to health care compared to the rich. An example of upstream thinking to address this problem is:

  1. Provide services to families through the use of a mobile van staffed with nurses and nurse practitioners.
  2. Donate food and money to the local food bank.
  3. Start a homeless shelter in your local community.
  4. Work with families to help them recognize how they are responsible for their own problems.

1 Upstream interventions are those that address the disease or disability before it happens or worsens, such as improving access to care through a mobile van staffed with nurses.
2 Donating food or money to a local food bank addresses the problem once it exists as opposed to upstream thinking, which would determine what could be done to prevent the need for food banks.
3 Starting a homeless shelter addresses the problem of homelessness once it exists as opposed to upstream thinking, which would determine how to prevent homelessness from becoming a problem.
4 Working with families to help them recognize their own responsibility for their problems does not address preventing the problems. Upstream thinking might ask why or how the problems existed in the first place.
