The population health nurse is working with a young adult female who admits to being severely abused as a child. The teaching that would be most appropriate initially is about:

  1. The results of risky sexual behavior.
  2. The possibility of her becoming a child abuser.
  3. General hygiene needs.
  4. General coping skills.

Answer: 1
Explanation: 1. Experience of abuse as a child has been shown to lead to risky sexual behavior and early pregnancy. Since the young adult admits to being severely abused the most appropriate initial teaching should be the results of risky behavior. A later teaching topic might include the possibility of her becoming a child abuser. General hygiene needs would not be an appropriate initial teaching as compared to the results of risky sexual behavior. Even though she might need some general coping skills that would not be the initial most appropriate teaching topic.
