Could someone please explain the differences between metabolic acidosis, respiratory acidosis, metabolic alkalosis, and respiratory alkalosis?

Acidosis and alkalosis are acid-base balance issues. I remember it this way:

ROME
R-Respiratory
O-Opposite
M-Metabolic
E-Equal

First, know your normal values:
pH = 7.35 - 7.45
CO2 = 35 - 45
HCO3 = 21-26

Then look at pH:
pH<7.35 = acidosis
pH>7.45 = alkalosis

Next, look at CO2. If it is either high or low, it is RESPIRATORY

Then, look at the HCO3. If it is high or low, then it is METABOLIC.

Compensation is an added part of this.
2 abnormal values = uncompensated
3 abnormal values = partially compensated
If the pH is normal, it is always FULLY COMPENSATED.
