Low levels of carbon dioxide have a reverse greenhouse effect and lead to cooling of the planet (seen especially in the Late Carboniferous/Early Permian). (This question can lead into a discussion of the effects of rising levels of CO2 on the world today, which is discussed in Chapter 25.)
