Hennigan et al. (1982) looked at the crime rate in cities that were just getting television stations in the 1950s.  Because of federal law, one group of cities was allowed to develop television broadcasting about 5 years before other cities were.  Hennigan found that the crime rate increase in the first group when TV arrived, but crime didn’t increase in the second group of cities until they got TV.
