Ascending sensory information is relayed from one nucleus to another in a series of steps, which permits modulation of the response, but this processing takes time. Why is this delay in response not dangerous to the organism?

Each additional synapse means another synaptic delay, but to compensate for this slowing of the response time, involuntary motor commands are issued by relay stations in the spinal cord and brain stem. While the conscious mind is still processing the information, neural reflexes provide an immediate response that can later be "fine tuned."
