Actually, viruses do not satisfy all the criteria which define something as alive

In order to be considered to be alive, something must exhibit all seven of:-

Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition

Viruses only exhibit reproduction by hijacking the replicating mechanisms of other cells.

They do not move, respire, react to stimuli, grow, excrete or take in nutriment

Viruses aren't generally consider alive, but they share some characteristics of other living organisms.'Life' is surprisingly hard to define. There is not one universally accepted definition.

I consider viruses to be alive (I'm not alone)- they submit to laws of evolution and there are plenty of extinct viruses. Moreover, the theory that if not all but some viruses evolved by reduction of ancient intracellular parasites is very neat: many parasites sacrificed chunks of their metabolic functions as well as anatomical structures to devote themselves to parasitism completely. Protozoan intracellular parasites like Toxoplasma heavily rely on cellular machinery.
Viruses reproduce, they contain DNA or RNA, lipids and proteins. As other organisms viruses can degrade and loose their viral properties (i.e. die).

Rocks  are minerals, they cannot reproduce and they cannot die, they cannot parasitize on living organisms.
