How do each of the following strategies contribute to the virulence of the pathogen? What disease does each organism cause?

Strategy/Pathogen
1.Changes its cell wall after entry into host/Yersinia pestis
2. Uses urea to produce ammonia/Helicobacter pylori
3. Causes host to make more receptors/Rhinovirus
4. Binds to site for epidermal growth factor on human cells/Salmonella

Y pestis causes the plague.  Changing the cell wall makes it hard for the immune system to recognize it as foreign

H pylori causes peptic ulcer disease and gastric cancer.  ammonia neutralizes stomach acid and protects it in an acid environment

rhinovirus causes the common cold.  It is a virus, and the cells are more likely to attach to another of its little buddies if it has more receptors.

salmonella causes salmenellosis, or food poisoning.  The binding to a growth factor site enables it to get inside the cell, the cell thinks it is getting a molecule of growth hormone, but SURPRISE!!!! bwahahaha
