1,2,3,4 -- A thyroid hormone deficit causes a reduction in heart rate and stroke volume, resulting in decreased cardiac output. There may also be an accumulation of fluid in the pericardial sac (from the edema characteristic of hypothyroidism), and coronary artery disease may be present. Increased cardiac output is not associated with hypothyroidism.
