1,2 -- The barium swallow evaluates the esophagus, stomach, and upper intestine while the upper endoscopy permits direct visualization of the esophagus. The Bernstein test, 24-hour pH monitoring, and esophageal manometry are less commonly used and require both additional monitoring and time for analyzing of results in making a definitive diagnosis.
