Hi there,

some phenotypic characteristics, such as eye colour, are quantitative; for example, you can count the number people with blue, green, or brown eyes. However, other characteristics, such as blood-type, are discrete.

I think that's what they are getting at. Someone correct me if I'm wrong Smiling Face with Open Mouth and Tightly-closed Eyes

They could be numerous; observable in a large portion of the population or individual and not observable on a large scale. And as you said, observable or not at all.
