(1) Nociceptors: a variety of stimuli associated with tissue damage;
(2) thermoreceptors: respond to changes in temperature;
(3) mechanoreceptors: stimulated by physical distortion, contact, or pressure; and
(4) chemoreceptors: monitor the presence of specific chemical substances.
