How can the light reflected off a planet reveal information about its atmosphere, even though the planet is not creating this light?

The light has to pass through the cool, thin gases in the planet's atmosphere, so that additional absorption lines will be added to the reflected light that were not present in the solar spectrum that reached the planet.
