Hi. Having a little trouble organizing this in my head and on paper for an exam, hoping someone could help.
The question is : "List the major types of organisms that are studied in microbiology and describe how they differ from one another in size and cell type." Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

major types: protozoa, fungi, algae, viruses and bacteria

bacteria: single celled, prokaryotic organisms
viruses: acellular (not cellular) , composed of nucleic acids surrendered by a protein coat

protozoa and fungi are eukaryotic cell

protozoa: single celled, eukaryotic organisms and lack a cell wall

hope it helps! Slight Smile

Thank you PharmacyMajor!

Ok, let me see if I have this right.

Prokaryotes:

Bacteria- single celled, no nucleus, live in extreme environments, ubiquitous

Eukaryotes:

Protozoa (algae, protists)-most are single celled, no cell wall, classified by their locomotion ( Sarcodina, Mastigophora, ciliophora, and Sporozoa)

Helminths-multi-cellular, classified by structure (Trematodes, Cestodes, and Nematodes)

Fungi- multi-cellular, have nucleus

Viruses- Non-cellular, parasitic, protein coated genetic elements, dependent on infected host
