A laser light has a wavelength of 670 nanometers and the separation between the two first order diffraction minima is 11 cm. The 8th order double slit interference maxima occurs at the same position as the 1st order diffraction minimum. The distance between the slits and the screen is two meters. Calculate the slit width and slit separation.

slit width and slit separation.

We can use the following formula
y = m(wavelengh)L/d, m = 0,1,2,3,4
where = mth bright fringe
L = distance between slit and screen =2m
d = separation distance between the 2 slits = 0.11m

The second dark fringe means m = 1,
Thus,
y = delta m(lembda)L/d
d = delta m(lembda)L/y
d = (1)(670E-9)(2)/(0.11)
slit seperation = d = 1.22E-5m or 0.012mm

slit width= 2y (the distance between two of these ticks)

= 0.024mm
