I have been thinking about this sort of philosophical question for several years. If these lower forms of life have no brains or nervous systems, then they have no self awarweness?  This seems odd that a life form get the opportunity to be alive but not know it ?  Is there the possibility that there exists some form of "life energy" or other type of awareness that we have not theorized or discovered yet?  If anyone could direct me to links to people who think about these kinds of questions, I would appreciate the help.

What makes you think that you are aware of yourself? Anymore than a tree is aware of itself... If you were simple enough to understand yourself you would be too simple to understand it... no? Lots of theorizing and discovering going on... thats what a library is for... or just google it mate!

Looking at it from a scientific perspective, life is something that consumes energy and reproduces itself.  In this definition, plants certainly qualify.

I think you are looking for a different kind of answer, though.  All parts of creation were created by God spiritually before they were created physically.  In other words, plants have a spiritual element.  It's this nature that animates the plant and makes it alive.  However, stuff that's generally considered to be non-living also has spiritual quality.  For example, if God says to the dust that it should move, it obeys Him.
