The date seed is very hard and resists soaking in water to soften. Does that necessitate the need to plant the fruit whole? If so, what type of soil is preferred? How long are the germination/tree maturity periods?

I've grown banana plants from seeds which are as hard as rocks. If you have several seeds, try scoring one or two of the seeds with something sharp - but not too much. Just a small notch will let the water get in faster, soak them overnight in water and then put them in a seedling medium. You just need the seed. If they're fresh dates they might sprout faster.

It worked for me.
