Many patients feel guilt, embarrassment, and anxiety about contracting an STI; this can cause them to defer care until the problem becomes severe. Although knowledge about the severity of STIs may be insufficient, this should not deter seeking care. Regardless of lifestyle, STIs should be treated immediately to prevent further transmission.
