What if a ROBOT stares at a MIRROR and learns to recognize himself. Would he have SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS or this demands a richer cognition ?

That would rule if that was the bringer of self awareness in robots.

Stick them in front of a mirror and viole'!

 It definitely demands a richer cognition. This is essentially just object recognition. In this case, the object happens to be the robot. It essentially just sees itself as another object. A computer being able to recognize its own physical appearance is a LONG way from self-awareness.

Of course, I firmly believe that it's only a matter of time before this leap occurs. Once processors finally catch up to the amount of neurological pathways in the human brain, there's no reason to think that they won't be capable of utilizing them in a manner similar to our own biological processor.

In order to be more convincing, they should later on, use the " spot test". It basically amounts to sticking a colorful small patch in his "forehead" without he perceiving it and then let him to stare at the mirror again and see if he tries to remove the patch with his hands. The problem is that for this test the researchers should add arms with hands on this robot.
