Stars with a total mass of 8 or more Sun's may fuse lighter elements into iron in their cores.  The iron damps out the nuclear furnace.  The high temperatures in the core gives photons the  excess energy necessary to split the iron nuclei via photodisintegration.  The subsequent violent collapse of the core triggers a Type II supernova.
