The following are general reasons for therapeutic diets and common examples of associated disorders: Regulating the amount of certain nutrients in disorders of metabolism (diabetes); increasing or decreasing body weight by adding or limiting calories and fat (underweight or overweight); reducing or preventing edema by controlling the level of sodium (cardiac conditions); and helping an overburdened organ regain normal function (nephritis).
