As long as livestock populations do not exceed a range's carrying capacity and do not consume grasses faster than they can be replaced, then grazing is sustainable. When overgrazing occurs, it exposes soils to erosion by wind and water. Native vegetation has a difficult time growing, causing a positive feedback loop that increases erosion. Overgrazing can also lead to the compression of soils, which damages soil structure. Forestry practices such as clear-cutting can lead to severe erosion due to the sudden exposure of soil to wind and rain. Road building to access logging areas also causes erosion and compaction.
