Time, distance, and shielding are methods of protecting the operator from radiation exposure. Attention to detail diminishes the need for retakes, so the operator spends less time near the x-ray machine. Structural shielding is generally sufficient, but if there is no barrier available, the operator should stand a minimum of 6 feet from the patient's head.
