a. Antibiotics commonly affect the GI tract either by direct irritation or indirectly by upsetting the normal GI flora, resulting in GI distress including nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. Antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis has been reported with most antibiotics, although it was first reported in hospital setting.
