Vegetation enters the first pair of compartments, the rumen and reticulum, where fermentative bacteria digest the cellulose. The partially processed food is regurgitated, chewed, and then passed through the esophagus to the second set of stomachs, the omasum and abomasum. The abomasum secretes digestive enzymes to serve as the glandular stomach.
