Disturbance of tropical rain forests by early human populations was much lower in both frequency and intensity compared to modern disturbance. With the advent of chainsaws, bulldozers and increased human population size, human disturbance of rain forests has moved from intermediate to high levels. The intermediate disturbance hypothesis would therefore predict that recent disturbances threaten the biological diversity of these forests, while earlier disturbances apparently did not.
