Turkington and colleagues (1998) found that although forests increased in primary productivity in response to fertilization, there was substantial variation among species What do these differences in response say about using the responses of individual species to predict responses at the ecosystem level? What about the reverse – can we predict the responses of individual species or growth forms from ecosystem-level responses?

Since different species had different responses to the same treatment, significant bias could occur when making ecosystem-level conclusions based on a single species. Similarly, while an ecosystem-level response is a good starting hypothesis for the response of a species or growth form, significant variation could exist at this finer scale.
