Safety requirements for phlebotomy include:
 
  a. Wearing gloves
  b. Wearing a face shield
  c. Recapping the needle immediately after removal from the arm
  d. Discarding blood contaminated gauze in the nearest wastebasket

Standard precautions require wearing gloves when performing phlebotomy; a face shield is not required unless splash is known to be a risk. Needles are never recapped (resheathed), and blood-contaminated gauze should be discarded in a biohazard bag.
