In a teaching plan for a hypertensive patient, the nurse would include:
1.   stopping medications if side effects occur.
2.   a diet high in unsaturated fat.
3.   no further visits if no other symptoms occur.
4.   encouraging relaxation techniques.

Patients with hypertension should never stop medications without discussing it with their physician. A diet low in saturated and unsaturated fat should be followed. Visits to monitor blood pressure should continue because hypertension is often asymptomatic. Stress can aggravate hypertension; stress management or relaxation strategies should be implemented.
