When a patient reports drowsiness from his antihypertensive medications, the nurse would include a nursing intervention instructing the patient to:
1.   take the medication only when sleep is needed.
2.   reduce the dose of the medication until the desired effect occurs.
3.   avoid activities that require alertness.
4.   talk to a counselor because this should not occur.

Sedation is a common side effect of antihypertensive medications. Avoid activities that are dangerous or require alertness. Medication may be taken at bedtime; however, it must be taken on a regular basis. Do not change the dose without talking to the physician.
