The nurse caring for a pediatric client receives a new medication order for the client. The order states ampicillin 100 mg/kg/day in divided doses q6h IVPB in 50 mL NS infuse over 30 minutes.

The directions state to reconstitute the 1 g vial with 10 mL of NS.. The child weighs 30 pounds. How many milliliters of this antibiotic will you withdraw from the vial? Round the answer to the nearest tenth.

3.4 mL

Global Rationale: mL/dose = 10 mL/1000 mg x 100 mg/1 kg x 1 kg/2.2 lbs x 30 lbs/1 day x 1 day/4 doses. The nurse will withdraw 3.4 mL of medication from the vial.
