D Correct. When a person has infective endocarditis, the infective organisms enter the blood and lodge and grow on the endocardium, forming what is generally referred to as vegetations. Vegetations, or abnormal growths, contribute to the inflammation of the heart valves and lining of the heart and can break off and embolize to other parts of the body.
