The nurse should avoid applying talcum powder because it may become sticky or cake on the skin and cause irritation. The child needs appropriate fluid intake to prevent constipation or stool impaction. This is especially important because activity is limited. The nurse should instruct caregivers that nothing should be put inside the cast. Keeping food, small toys, and sharp objects away from the cast will be important.
